What the Pause Gives
A cat peered out
from under a dark green yew
next to a red barn
set back from the road.
The cat gray and white.
Young. Big eyes.
Quiet. Watching.
A chance stopping
to adjust my bike seat.
In the pause,
I spotted the cat.
It took my stopping,
a shift in time.
I still think
about the cat,
about all the things
we don’t see
when sights are set
and then when stop,
what that pause brings.
