A Poem by David Melville

The Crack

Those drowsy mornings, sun’s

blaze in the eye,

hot tinder in the mind –

sleep’s narcotic fog, a blot

burst through –

needle through gauze.

Still groggy from the stupor

of a thousand wanton nights,

I wonder:

when at last

will the curtain draw back?

When will I awake?

…..
